Member News-Leslie Plimpton
Leslie Plimpton is exhibiting two pieces in the juried Ventura Artists Union show, “There is Me.”
once upon a time
/ oh best beloved / there is me
A friend once told me art is not a hobby, a luxury, it is a necessity for our very well being. It is who we are.
This is an exhibit that looks at the personal necessary element of art and how it intersects with the self.
The show is from July 30 through August 28th so this is the last week to catch the show. It is being presented at 643 A Project Space,
located at 643 N. Ventura Avenue, Ventura, CA. Please come down this weekend to see some amazing art.

Focus on the Masters kicks off its 2015-16 Artist Spotlight season on Nov. 7 in the Screening Room of Brooks Institute in Ventura. The Spotlight interview will feature the inkspots. Founder Virginia Furmanski will be joined by Bay Hallowell and Inés Monguió in a panel discussion led by Dr. Judy Larson. The inkspots were formed in 2007 by Virginia who explains that the group is greater than the sum of its parts. “We take classes together. We learn new techniques.”
Four Ventura artists interested in printmaking formed the original inkspots group in 2007 by pooling their resources and creating a printmaking studio at the Sea Breeze Gallery in Ventura. The inkspots of San Buenaventura are a group of artists dedicated to creating original prints using a variety of techniques including etching, collagraph, linocut, monoprint, monotype, woodblock, and digital manipulation.
Spotlight interviews are free to FOTM Members, $10 for general public, $5 students and seniors.
Immediately following the interview guests will gather at 643 A Project Space for the AfterGLOW Fundraising Event. Paid reservations are required for the AfterGLOW: $25 for FOTM members and $35 for non-members. An exhibit of works by inkspots artists will run from November 6 through December 19 at 643 A Project Space.
Tickets for both the panel discussion and the AfterGLOW are available online at: www.FocusOnTheMasters.com or by calling 653.2501.
Also during the First Friday ArtWalk on Nov.6 the inkspots will have an opening reception from 5:00—8:00 p.m. 643 A Project Space, 643 N. Ventura Ave.
A free drawing for the inkspots 2015 Folio will take place at the

Nancy Macko @ Project 643 space
643 Project Space presents:
Nancy Macko, Hopes and Dreams: A Visual MemoirNancy Macko
Hopes and Dreams: A Visual Memoir
Opening Reception: Friday, Feb. 4, 6-9pm
Closing Reception: Saturday, Feb. 26, 1-2pm
643 Project Space is pleased to present work by artist Nancy Macko. In 2003 Ms. Macko’s mother began to show signs of memory loss eventually diagnosed as dementia. Over the last six years she has been documenting her mother’s decline through audio tapes and photographs. The act of losing one’s memory and sense of time is difficult at best to describe but can be understood through an experience of it. Ms. Macko states that, “It reminds me of “calving” a term used to describe the process when huge chunks of glaciers just break off and fall into the sea. It is as if the mind “calves” and there seems to be no end to the process.”
In the summer of 2008, she began Hopes & Dreams, a series of large format digital prints that act as a visual memoir and attempt to visually describe this “loss of memory.” This body of work visually explores the “arc” of a life. Nancy Macko is a member of the faculty at Scripps College where she currently chairs the Gender and Women’s Studies Department and is the Director of the Scripps Digital Art Program. Ms. Macko exhibits her work extensively and one of her most recent exhibitions, Hive Universe: Nancy Macko, 1994-2006, was exhibited at the Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work is in numerous public collections with recent acquisitions by the RISD Museum, Brown University, LACMA and the Samella Lewis Collection of Contemporary Art at Scripps College.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. 643 A Project Space is an alternative contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and established national and international artists. The gallery is located near downtown Ventura on the west end at 643 N. Ventura Av, Ventura. For more information, call 805-218-1434
