Donna Carver has Curated for the next 12 months a New Solo Art Gallery Space @ Backbone
in Gig Harbor Washington. It features only Pennisual Art Artists who are not in a Co op Gallery in Gig Harbor. The Grand Opening Show Featured Works of Fine Art by Pacific Coast Artist and Gig Harbor Resident Donna Carver.

The Grand Opening was held on August 6th, 2011 Featuring Donna Carver as the Solo Artist. It was well recieved and attended by the Community.

Dr. Christen Cohen is showcasing and hosting each Solo Artist event, which is held the first Sat. of each month. This opening is the Caboose of the Historic Downtown ArtWalk.

The Grand Opening featured Works of Fine Art, Wine and Cheese Pairings, and live Jazz music.

There’s a new art space opening in Gig Harbor – and for a change, it’s not a cooperative. Gig Harbor has many galleries operated by and showing the work of many artists, but The Art Space @ Backbone, opening this weekend at Backbone Restored chiropractic, will showcase solo work by members of the Peninsula Art League.

The gallery, created by former Chamber of Commerce president Dr. Christian Cohen at his chiropractic offices, will be curated by printmaker Donna Carver, who will also be the first artist to show in the space. Shows will rotate monthly, with artist receptions from 4-7 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month (Art Walk). Upcoming artists include Kashia Hill, Arvid Anderson, Mary McInnis, Anne Knapp, Pat Meras, Lynda Lindner, Kathy OBrien-Rywacki, Myrna Binion, Darlene Dihel, Marti Green, and Susan Paredes.

643 Project Space is pleased to present work by artist Nancy Macko. In 2003 Ms. Macko’s mother began to show signs of memory loss eventually diagnosed as dementia. Over the last six years she has been documenting her mother’s decline through audio tapes and photographs. The act of losing one’s memory and sense of time is difficult at best to describe but can be understood through an experience of it. Ms. Macko states that, “It reminds me of “calving” a term used to describe the process when huge chunks of glaciers just break off and fall into the sea. It is as if the mind “calves” and there seems to be no end to the process.”

In the summer of 2008, she began Hopes & Dreams, a series of large format digital prints that act as a visual memoir and attempt to visually describe this “loss of memory.” This body of work visually explores the “arc” of a life. Nancy Macko is a member of the faculty at Scripps College where she currently chairs the Gender and Women’s Studies Department and is the Director of the Scripps Digital Art Program. Ms. Macko exhibits her work extensively and one of her most recent exhibitions, Hive Universe: Nancy Macko, 1994-2006, was exhibited at the Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work is in numerous public collections with recent acquisitions by the RISD Museum, Brown University, LACMA and the Samella Lewis Collection of Contemporary Art at Scripps College.

Elizabeth Manger and Judy Gibbs attended the Monotype/Monoprint workshop

with New Mexico printmaker Michael McCabe in early December

at Linda Taylor’s Studio in Ojai.

It was a wonderful, hands-on learning experience, and fun as well.

Michael and Linda, working together, created a friendly

and supportive environment in a great studio space.

Both Bay Hallowell and Karen L Brown will be having solo shows this coming year.

Bay will be showing at the SB library in February

and

Karen will be at the Buenaventura Art Gallery in June 21-July 16th 2011

We are sure both shows will feature more AMAZING work from both women.

Presenting a Solo Show of the works of Fine Art by Pacific Coast Artist, and now Gig Harbor resident, Donna Carver.

The show is entitled “A Moment in Time”,

featuring the Coastal Waters and Shorelines.

This show will run from June 4 – July 31, 2010.

An opening reception to meet the artist will be held on Friday, June 4th from 4 – 7 pm.

Carver’s emotional response to the coastal waters and shorelines is translated in rich colors that allow the viewer to respond to her creative process. Other viewers might feel transported to the serenity and energy that our coastal waters exude –

these experiences enrich our lives and lift our hearts, if only for, “a moment in time”.

Ventura Music Festival's Treasure Chests

This year, the Ventura Music Festival presents “Treasure Chests”, the fifth annual visual arts exhibition presented in partnership with selected local artists. Handcrafted chests (30 x 20 x 20”) were the canvases upon which these accomplished artists rendered richly diverse and three dimensional compositions. This exciting show is produced in conjunction with “Romanze!,” the Festival’s 2010 concert season.
These unique works will be on display at local venues from mid-December to early March.

“Treasure Chests” is a successful celebration and collaboration of visual art and music!

In the Harbor Village Gallery Show, she received First Place Award for an encaustic/mixed media piece, "The Big Fish Story."

We hung our show Thursday afternoon thanks to the great work of Karen and Sandra!!

Tiger helped hammer in the last few pieces and Donna and Monica brought up the back doing the final cleaning of the space and pieces.

The show opened last night, and was attended by approximately 150-200 people!

the gallery was full the whole time and at 8pm we had to turn away people as the visitors center had closed.

We received a lot of great comments and congratulations.

It was a great success for each of us and the group as a whole.

The show will feature our varying styles of Fine Art Printmaking.

Ron Pokrasso, master printmaker from Santa Fe, New Mexico, will be giving a Non Toxic Printmaking Workshop at Linda Taylor's Spotted Dog Studio in Ojai April 1-5. Ron will teach a multitude of monotype and solarplate techniques, utilizing Akua Intaglio Inks, a soy base ink. No solvents will be used in this class. The class is excellent for the beginner as well as the advanced printmaker. Ron is an outstanding teacher and artist who has over 20 years experience with both monotype and solarplate techniques and is featured in Julia Ayers book, "Monoprinting". The class is limited to 8 people. The fee is $650, which includes all printmaking materials except for printing paper. One solarplate is also included. The question of personal identity is a complex and constantly evolving process of self-knowledge that cannot be easily answered. What makes a person uniquely who they are is influenced by a myriad of factors including culture, ethnicity, gender, profession, psychology, values, and memory. Self identification in our modern, multicultural time may seem for some to be a riddle with unlimited possibilities. In collaboration with the Los Angeles Printmaking Society (LAPS), CAFAM hosts a juried exhibition of world class printmakers that ponders the age-old question of identity within the context of contemporary life. The artwork selected for Identity: Unlimited Editions represents a diverse range of personal expression as negotiated in this world of shifting and constantly evolving labels. Judith Amdur’s Fighting for My Life displays the blatant beauty of a human body surviving cancer; Joseph Vorgity’s The Boy Saint documents a spiritual journey influenced by, and eventually separated from, religious dogma; and Nancy Jo Hasselbacher records her mother’s genetic legacy through the physical imprint of her body.

She has had two large works of art selected to be part of Community Memorial Hospital's new Art Exhibit Space. This show "Variations on a Local Theme".

She recieved "Honorable Mention" at Buenventura's Art Association," Christmas Ornament Design, Think Outside the Box" juried show. Proceeds from the sale of this collection of ornaments (which were donatated by the artists) will go to FoodShare.

December Workshops in Ojai
Michael McCabe, Master Printer from Santa Fe, NM, with over 20 years experience working with printers and printshops in Santa Fe, including Hand Graphics, will be giving 3 workshops in Ojai at the Spotted Dog Studio of Linda Taylor in December, 2008. Waterbase Monotype and Chine Colle Intensive are limited to 8 students, Viscosity is limited to 7. The studio has 3 large format presses and one small format press, so each workshop participant has extensive access to the press, and will come away from the 5 day workshops with a minimum of 10-15 prints.All supplies except for printing paper are included in the fee, and printing paper is available at cost ($3/ sheet).There is an ample supply of plexiglass plates of all sizes for use by participants.The studio is also well supplied with brayers, pencils, cutting matts, scissors and space to store drying prints. Each artist will have a large working space.The Spotted Dog Studio is located at a residence, with access to restful yard, kitchen, coffee, tea, bathrooms, etc.

WATERBASE MONOTYPE - DEC. 1-5 - $625An intensive five-day workshop exploring the monotype process using the Akua monotype and Akua intaglio inks. The program is designed for the novice as well as those more experienced with the medium of waterbase inks. The workshop will focus on several techniques, including chine colle, mixed media, multiple plate monotypes, viscosity and stencils.Michael's vast experience as a master printer opens many avenues for producing successful works on paper. All the artistic advantages which monotype has to offer can be explored and exploited as each print leads to the next, and a deeper understanding of the medium.

MICHAEL'S CHINE COLLE INTENSIVE - DEC. 7 & 8 - $200Chine Colle is a collage process that incorporates pieces of paper that are glued simultaneously while a print is being transferred. Chine colle may be used in partnership with all printmaking techniques, as well as a medium unto itself. All types of adhesives will be discussed, and dry and wet printing will be demonstrated. Students are encouraged to bring asian papers (often called "rice" paper) drawings, photos, or any paper "ephemera" including old envelopes, stanps, lace, book pages, etc., to explore the limits of this versatile medium.

OIL BASED VISCOSITY MONOTYPE PRINTS - DEC 10-14- $625Michael McCabe has been refining his technique in viscosity for the last 20 years. This workshop is an opportunity to benefit from his vast experience. Viscosity printing, first invented as an aid to printing colored etchings, has been adapted to all printmaking techniques.The workshop will cover the various ways to modify inks to repel or attract each other. Applying multiple layers of ink of different viscosities to a single plate can yield unique effects that cannot be achieved otherwise. Additional techniques will be combined with viscosity to create a beautiful range of works. Chine colle and glazes will also be discussed as those techniques relate to viscosity.
